Prior to the Revolution in America, the world was in a state of change. One area of great changes was in colonist's religions, due to the Great Awakening. Beliefs that religion wasn't meant to be the same for everyone were spreading across the world, thanks to figures like George Whitefield and Johnathan Edwards. Religion could be personal. In the same vein, the world was being studied with observation and collection of data. This new system of problem solving brought on the Enlightenment. The mysteries of the earth were studied using a rational, observational method of study to determine what was happening. This new belief brought on physical scientists like Isaac Newton and social scientists like John Locke and Thomas Hobbes.
